How to download your American Express transactions as a CSV
American Express's US help page confirms that you can download your card activity as a CSV from your online account. The page says very little beyond that, so this guide is short too.
What Amex's page confirms
- You download the file through your online account on the American Express website.
- The download covers your recent activity and your past six billing statements.
- The formats offered are CSV, Quicken and QuickBooks. Pick CSV.
- Amex says the options are on the left side of the page.
What it does not say
- The exact menu path to the download page. This is UNKNOWN to us, and we do not guess menus. If you cannot find it, use the chat icon in your Amex account, as Amex's page suggests.
- The CSV columns, or whether purchases appear as positive or negative numbers. UNKNOWN to us.
- Whether the app offers the same download. The page describes the online account only.
- Anything about cards issued outside the US. We used only the US page.
One thing to check after you load a card CSV
Many card exports show purchases as positive numbers. If a file has one amount column and no negative numbers at all, the categorizer treats positive numbers as spending. It tells you so with a ticked box, which you can untick. If your file has both positive and negative numbers, check that box yourself and make sure purchases count as spending, not income. See categorizing credit card transactions.
Have we tested an Amex file?
Not a real one. During development we used only a made-up file that we wrote ourselves in the shape of an Amex export. That does not test the real format. We have not run a real American Express CSV.

Then categorize it free, offline
Open the categorizer and drop the CSV on the page. It sorts every line into categories and shows monthly totals. The file is read inside your browser tab and is not uploaded.
Free: one file at a time, the latest 3 months of it. Categories are automatic guesses, so check them before you use the numbers for tax. CSV for most banks; PDF only for ADIB statements.
